New Haven Music School to offer Bluegrass ensemble and jamming class
CT bluegrass musician, concert promoter and podcaster Chris Wuerth leads four bluegrass classes at Neighborhood Music School in New Haven. From September to May, small groups of 5-7 students meet every week, to play classic bluegrass songs. The only prerequisite is basic ability on a stringed instrument, like guitar, banjo, fiddle, mandolin, dobro or acoustic bass. This year they’ve added a new class, Introduction to Bluegrass Jamming. Community Folk Music Jam every second Sunday of the month in Middlefield CT
“Join us for the Middlefield Community Music Jam, a welcoming monthly gathering for musicians, singers, listeners, families, and neighbors. The heart of the jam will be traditional acoustic music, including bluegrass, old-time Appalachian and fiddle tunes, Irish music, folk songs, and other roots music traditions.
Participants are welcome to bring an instrument, bring their voice, or simply come to listen and enjoy the music. The event is designed to be relaxed and community-centered, with opportunities for informal jamming, learning, singing along, and connecting with other local musicians.
The core musical focus will be bluegrass, old-time, fiddle, Irish, Quebecois, and acoustic folk traditions, with other genres included on a rotating basis. Depending on the month, participants may find themed jams, beginner-friendly circles, song shares, open mic-style performance sign-ups, or special guest musicians.
All experience levels are welcome. Whether you are an experienced player, a beginner looking for a friendly place to practice, a singer who wants to share a song, or a community member who just enjoys live music, there is a place for you.
The Community Music Jam is free and open to the public.

The Hazel Project, New England’s premier tribute to the pioneers of women in bluegrass, reached a historic milestone this February at the Joe Val Bluegrass Festival. The ensemble was joined on stage by the legendary Alice Gerrard for a performance that bridged generations of traditional grassroots music. The collaboration comes on the heels of a breakout year for The Hazel Project. Following a celebrated debut at Thomas Point Beach in 2024 and a featured profile in the March 2025 issue of Bluegrass Unlimited, the band has quickly become a “must-see” act on the Northeast circuit. Featuring Betsy Green (fiddle), Gretchen Bowder (banjo), Whitney Roy (guitar), and Lindsay Lassonde (bass), the group dedicates its repertoire to the raw, socially conscious catalog of Hazel Dickens and Alice Gerrard.
